The impetus for this website came from the participation of a Grade 2/3 class in a special email-oriented project, Cultural Connections, sponsored by The Learning Partnership. This Toronto-based organization spearheads the Hands on IT (Information Technology) Project, of which Holy Rosary School (Burlington) is an active participant. As Principal of this school, I wanted to work along with the children and motivate them in not only to learning to use email, but also in enhancing their writing and reading skills.

Buddy always wanted to have his own website. However, it had to be special and have its own niche. There are dozens of wonderful Beardie websites on the Internet and Buddy is pleased to be among them. He's always looking for more contact so he can give out more Beardie hugs and kisses. Being an advocate of literacy is one way Buddy can do this

The concept of the site was that it should be interactive. Kids, either in school or at home, should be able to enjoy the pursuit of literacy. Buddy's site hopefully offers that. Everyone ought to experience the joy a Beardie brings.

Website development and the pursuit of HTML are worth the effort for interested educators looking for ways to hook kids on writing and reading. The idea of the guestbook and text-based forms are two ways that you can make a site interactive. And, believe me, they are easy to do. Buddy's site gives kids a purpose for writing.

If you would like to learn more about the development of this site, or if you would like your class to write to Buddy, please let me know. I'd be pleased to offer Buddy's services. We just need to clip his nails so that he remains a capable typist. At first glance the website would appeal to kids from Kindergarten to Grade 3, but there is potential to go higher.

Finally, if there are any literacy sites you would like me to consider, please send email about them. Just include the URL and a brief description. I am always open to comments about the site, so if there is room for improvement or you really like something, let me know also. Have fun with Buddy's site.
