Dear Parents,

Buddy the Literacy Dog is coming!

Our class will be participating in an online inquiry project entitled, "Buddy's Bearded Collie Literacy Notebook Featuring "Bentley and Blueberry". Buddy the Literacy Dog, is a Bearded Collie, also known as a Beardie. We will be interacting with Buddy via Internet. His literacy based website may be found at: http://www.skylinc.net/~scarfone/buddy.htm . You may find detailed project information in the "Projects" section of the website.

During the project you may expect that:

• Children will develop reading and writing skills.
• Children will develop inquiry skills.
• Children and teachers will use information technology for a purpose.
• Children will become sensitive to the needs of new pets.
• Parents will participate in home reading with their children.

• Buddy (a plush toy) will have the opportunity to visit each child's home.

We are looking forward to the many exciting activities Buddy has planned for us. I ask the whole family to participate in Buddy's home visit and that you take very special care of Buddy. He must travel around the globe to other classes to fulfill his mission of literacy.

Dear Parents,

Buddy the Literacy Dog arrived in our class! Today he is coming home with your child. Please take very good care of Buddy. He must travel to other classes around the globe to fulfill his mission of literacy. Send Buddy back to our classroom tomorrow.

Included are the following:

• A copy of the book, Bentley and Blueberry, by Randy Houk.
• An audiocassette of the story.
• Parent Pages sent courtesy of The Benefactory Inc. publishers.

Read the story to / with your child. Discuss the story. Ask your child what happened in the story. What did your child learn about the way we treat or train new pets? Next, work along side your child to complete the activities contained in the Parent Pages.

Please let me know about Buddy's visit to your home. Did you enjoy hosting Buddy? What did he have for dinner? Did he play? Did Buddy get to do special things like stay up past his bedtime (8:00 p.m.)? Tell me anything you wish about Buddy's visit!
