Storytelling Strategies

IMPORTANT NOTE: The following strategies incorporated some of the ideas found in the Benefactory's "Storytelling Guide" which accompanies its "Amazing True Stories" Kit, #SK2, of which Bentley and Blueberry is a part.

PLEASE...remember to read and reread the story before presenting it to the children. You will become more familiar with the content and be able to properly use expression as you read. Thanks, Buddy.

A. Pre-reading Context Setting the Stage:

1. This is a true story. It really happened to the author, Randy Houk.

2. Conduct a discussion about the children and their pets:

  • How many have a pet? Did it come from a shelter?
  • What is the name of your pet?
  • What makes your pet special?

3. This story is about dogs. Elicit children's knowledge of dogs.

  • Types of dogs both large and small.
  • Why dogs make good pets.

4. The story is about Bearded Collies. What do you remember about Bearded Collies from visiting Buddy's website? Visit Hobo's website to find hundreds of great links about Bearded Collies.

Questions for the children to think about while the story is being read:

a) Why did Mrs. Moody wish to get another dog?

b) What did Mrs. Moody learn about training dogs?

C. Story Comprehension and Follow-up

1. Focus on such questions as:

  • What was your favourite part of the story?
  • How did Blueberry become part of Mrs. Moody's family?
  • What was Bentley's reaction?
  • Why did Mrs. Moody wish to get another dog?
  • What did Mrs. Moody learn about training dogs?
  • How did Blueberry adjust to life with Mrs. Moody and Bentley?
  • What are some good tips about training a dog? Why?

2. Ask if the children how any questions. Try to answer them.

3. Real life follow-up: Today Bentley and Blueberry live with Mrs. Moody in Connecticut (a state), USA. They share their home with two cats, Bob and Bonzai.
