Feb. 7 - Landed in Nagano at 5:30 a.m. local time via BeardieAIR. Suffering from lag. The opening ceremonies were wonderful. I loved all the music. The Japanese people are wonderful hosts. The parade of athletes was very colourful. Where is Wayne Getzky though?
Did you see that Sumo wrestler who "purified" the stadium? Wasn't he a big fella? Heading to the ski slopes next.
Feb. 8 - Snowboarding Rules - Beardies would love this sport because we take everything to the extreme! Way to go Canadian Ross Rebagliati, who captured the sport's first Olympic gold medal! Ross powered his way downhill, carving every flag in sight. Ross' motto: No time is better than a slow time. Catch the full story. O Canada, our home and...
Downhill cancelled today. Will try again Wednesday...
Feb. 9 - Snow and more snow. Tough sledding in Nagano for everyone except Georg Hackl, the German luger who was anything but a loser when he captured the gold medal in his third straight Olympics. This guy raced down the track at over 100 km per hour. His friends call him "The Racing Sausage".
Well I hope the weather cooperates tomorrow. I really want to see that skiing!
Feb. 10 - Nice weather has returned to the Olympics, but the Canadian team must "weather" a difficult problem. Since a drug test turned up marijuana from Ross Rebagliati we are all disappointed. This may be a good time for Buddy to remind everyone to, "Just Say No to Drugs" or at least, stay away from people who use them.
I am very happy for all the Olympic athletes who have tried their best. I enjoyed watching the moguls today. You know, high-flying skiing with all those funny bumps. Reminded me of a waffle iron! Well, nothing to fear, the Great One (not me) is here!
Feb. 11 - The Flying Finn, Jani Soininen, soared in the 90 meter ski jump event held today to win the gold medal. He outjumped Japanese rival Masahiko Harada who hoped to win before the home crowd. What an amazing feeling that must be - to fly like a bird.
On the lighter side, Philip Boit and Henry Bitok of Africa are members of the Kenyan cross-country skiing team. It's only been about two years since they first saw snow. Ever think that African countries would send a skiing team? The Games are very surprising.
Feb. 12 - Team Canada Wins! Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy lead the Canadians with a shut-out performance in a 5-0 victory over Belarus. Is this team great or what?
The weather is very nice around the Olympic Village where the athletes stay, but is strange on the slopes. Windy, snowy, rainy. You never can tell.
Feb. 13 - Congratulations to gold medal champion snowboarder Ross Rebagliati who may keep his medal after it was taken away earlier this week. He was very happy to hear the good new and thanked all his family, friends and all of Canada for supporting him. I think Ross is a great guy but he should really buy himself a gas mask if he's going to be around second hand smoke. Come to think of it, all of us should!
Feb. 14 - Happy Valentine's Day from Nagano. It wasn't so happy for Elvis Stojko who really wanted to win the gold medal for skating but won a silver instead. Elvis was badly injured. He told no one. He kept it all to himself and never complained once. I give Elvis a gold medal for courage! Way to go Elvis!
Update: Ok, so what if Olympic cross country competitor Philip Bitok of Kenya finished last in the 10 km race? Norwegian superstar cross country skiier Bjorn Daehlie who won the gold medal in that race waited at the finish line in the rain and snow to congratuate and hug Bitok. Beardie hugs to Bjorn! Now that's what the Olympics are all about.
Feb. 15 - Cool Runnings for the Canadian 2 man Bobsled team which finished tied with Italy for the gold today in Nagano. Imagine that, both teams with exactly the same times! Do the Math. Medal count is 9 and growing. "Peace be the Journey!"
This reporting business can't be all work and no play, so I think I'll give Daisy a call. Better yet, I'll email Daisy. You can too. She lives in Ichikawa, in Chiba Prefecture in Japan. Take a look at her homepage and a map that shows how far she is from Nagano. Do I have time to visit Daisy? You bet.
Feb. 16 - Congratulations to Team Canada for shining performances against all opposition. They are perfect and headed for the medal round. Bring on the Russians, bring on the Czechs, bring on the world!
Way to go ice dancers Shae-Lynne Borne and Victor Kratz. You did very well and I loved your Riverdance number!
Feb. 17 - All Hail Harada!! Yes, Japanese ski jumping sensation Harada soared through the wind high above the hills of Nagano to land a perfectly spectacular jump. Harada helped the Japanese team capture the gold medal in the team event.
"I did it. I did it," Harada said later as tears rolled down his cheeks. "All four of us worked together and got the gold. We helped each other. Everyone was the best." (cnnsi quote)
Feb. 18 - Congratulations to all the athletes who participated in the Games. Most of them are staying in the Olympic Village. There are a lot of people from many different countries walking aroung the streets of Nagano, buying souvenirs.
Feb. 19 - Tara Lipinski wins ladies' figure skating today. What a sensational performance. Way to go Tara! Daisy's been practising for the Beardie Olympics. She also won a gold medal!
Annie Perreault of Canada claimed gold in the women's 500-meter short track Olympic speed skating event Thursday after her teammate, world record holder Isabelle Charest, was disqualified because she caused a crash.
Feb. 20 - Skipping the games today. Visiting with Daisy. Disappointed to hear that Team Canada lost to the Czech Republic. Wayne Gretzky was heartbroken as we all were. Good try guys!
Feb. 21 - Canadians capture team relay gold in speed skating. In that great race, the 5,000-metre relay, Marc Gagnon whose hopes were dashed earlier in the 500 m short track when he fell - with Derrick Campbell of Cambridge, Ont., Eric Bedard of St-Thecle, Que., and Francois Drolet of Quebec City - won his first Olympic gold medal.
Feb. 22 - Czechs win Gold Medal in Hockey. "Dominator shouts out Russians! Congrats to the Czech team, having least number of NHL players out of the Dream 6, on their victory. What a gutsy performance.
The games ended with fantastic, traditional and colourful closing ceremonies. Most memorable were the Drums of Nagano. Thank you to our fine hosts, the Japanese people. Domo arigato, Nagano! I'm going to relax for a day or two and then head back to Canada.
