Bud's Summer Magic

My Trip to Niagara Falls

Dear Buddy,

This summer I went with my family to Niagara Falls. It was very loud and very wet. There was a boat in the river that took people close to the Falls. I want to go back again.

Bud's Easter Fun
Buddy Saves the Day

It was the day before Easter. Buddy was excited but something wasn't quite going right. Easter Bunny had lost his magic basket. So Easter Bunny phoned Buddy.

"Hi," said Easter Bunny, "I need you to help me."

"What do you need help with?" asked Buddy.

"I need you to help me find my magic Easter basket."

"Of course I'll help you!" said Buddy.

So on the night before Easter morning, Buddy went out searching for the Easter basket. On the way he bumped into Easter Bunny. "Hi!" said Easter Bunny.

"Hi!" said Buddy.

"Are you ready to help me?" asked Easter Bunny.

"Of course," said Buddy.

"Okay, then let's go!"

So they walked and they walked and they walked. Soon Buddy smelt something. So Buddy told Easter Bunny, "Follow me." Easter Bunny did. "Look!" shouted Buddy, "It's your Easter basket."

"Oh good," said Easter Bunny, "Let's all go back to my house and have a big party."

The Missing Easter Eggs

It was the day befor Easter and the Easter bunny was in his work shop. The Easter bunny's name was Tom. Tom was getting ready for Easter. Easter was also Tom's birthday. Tom was packing eggs. When he was done packing he could not see one egg in his bag. His friend Matt came. He was a hedgehog. Tom told Matt that his eggs disappeared. Tom and Matt were scared. Matt said, "We should look for it." Tom and Matt went on their motorcycles. When they were on their motorcycles they disappeared.

Matt's dog Buddy was tied up. Matt freed Buddy with his spikes. Buddy ran to the eggs and then a monster came. Buddy jumped up to the monster and tried to bite him, but he got hurt. Matt attacked the monster, but he got hurt too.

Buddy got up on two feet and tackled the monster. He scared the monster away. Matt ran for the egg and he made it! The very next day everyone had a good time for Easter. Buddy became a hero.

How Buddy Saved Easter

The Easter Bunny lost his magic Easter Basket and was very worried. No one had a clue where the Easter Bunny lost his basket. "Trouble", barked Buddy.

The next day it was going to be Easter. No one could find it. That night Buddy went to find it. The next day Buddy came home with the Easter basket. The Easter Bunny was so happy. "Thank you Buddy."

"Ruff, ruff."

That is how Buddy saved Easter.

The Easter Without the Bunny

It was the day before Easter. Something wasn't quite right. The Easter Bunny called his friend. Her name was Kerry. She had met the Easter Bunny one Easter when she was 4 years old. That was 3 years ago. The Easter Bunny said "I am not going to be able to give out Easter eggs on Easter."

Kerry said, "Why?"

The Easter Bunny said, "Because I am sick." Then he hung up. "What am I going to do?" Easter Bunny was worried. The children will be so disappointed.

Kerry could not sleep or eat. Then Kerry had an idea. She would take the eggs. It would be a happy Easter after all!

Timmy and Max Save the Easter Bunny

Once upon a time there were two brothers, Tim and Max. It was the day before Easter and the Easter Bunny was in a rush. He got all the Easter baskets and he was off. He was walking along and he got trapped by the King Weasle. Timmy and Max saw this and they made a plan to save the Easter Bunny.

They got into Easter Land. There were chocolate eggs all over. They got into a black tunnel. They peeked around the corner and saw King Weasle. They went back to get Austin. Then they went back. The King Weasle saw them and then he started to throw Easter Eggs at them.

Austin caught them with his hockey glove. They got out and thought of another plan. They thought and thought. They got another plan. It was to make fake eggs. When he bit into the egg King Weasle would break his teeth. They got the Easter Bunny and on the way the Weasle's brother caught the Easter Bunny. Tim and Max got away, but the Easter Bunny was taken to the evil dungeon. King Weasle said, "Give me all of your eggs."

The Easter Bunny said, "Never!"

They were getting worried because it was almost Easter morning. So they went back to get the Easter Bunny. King Weasle was getting ready to cook rabbit stew. Timmy and Max rescued the Easter Bunny. The evil brother began chasing them. They jumped out of Easter Land and the Easter Bunny said, "Thank you."

They woke up in the morning. There was a big basket and the tag said, "HELP, HELP, the Weasle got me again."

Timmy and Max said, "Oh, no, not again!"

Go Canada Go

Feb. 7 - Landed in Nagano at 5:30 a.m. local time via BeardieAIR. Suffering from lag. The opening ceremonies were wonderful. I loved all the music. The Japanese people are wonderful hosts. The parade of athletes was very colourful. Where is Wayne Getzky though?

Did you see that Sumo wrestler who "purified" the stadium? Wasn't he a big fella? Heading to the ski slopes next.

Feb. 8 - Snowboarding Rules - Beardies would love this sport because we take everything to the extreme! Way to go Canadian Ross Rebagliati, who captured the sport's first Olympic gold medal! Ross powered his way downhill, carving every flag in sight. Ross' motto: No time is better than a slow time. Catch the full story. O Canada, our home and...

Downhill cancelled today. Will try again Wednesday...

Feb. 9 - Snow and more snow. Tough sledding in Nagano for everyone except Georg Hackl, the German luger who was anything but a loser when he captured the gold medal in his third straight Olympics. This guy raced down the track at over 100 km per hour. His friends call him "The Racing Sausage".

Well I hope the weather cooperates tomorrow. I really want to see that skiing!

Feb. 10 - Nice weather has returned to the Olympics, but the Canadian team must "weather" a difficult problem. Since a drug test turned up marijuana from Ross Rebagliati we are all disappointed. This may be a good time for Buddy to remind everyone to, "Just Say No to Drugs" or at least, stay away from people who use them.

I am very happy for all the Olympic athletes who have tried their best. I enjoyed watching the moguls today. You know, high-flying skiing with all those funny bumps. Reminded me of a waffle iron! Well, nothing to fear, the Great One (not me) is here!

Feb. 11 - The Flying Finn, Jani Soininen, soared in the 90 meter ski jump event held today to win the gold medal. He outjumped Japanese rival Masahiko Harada who hoped to win before the home crowd. What an amazing feeling that must be - to fly like a bird.

On the lighter side, Philip Boit and Henry Bitok of Africa are members of the Kenyan cross-country skiing team. It's only been about two years since they first saw snow. Ever think that African countries would send a skiing team? The Games are very surprising.

Feb. 12 - Team Canada Wins! Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy lead the Canadians with a shut-out performance in a 5-0 victory over Belarus. Is this team great or what?

The weather is very nice around the Olympic Village where the athletes stay, but is strange on the slopes. Windy, snowy, rainy. You never can tell.

Feb. 13 - Congratulations to gold medal champion snowboarder Ross Rebagliati who may keep his medal after it was taken away earlier this week. He was very happy to hear the good new and thanked all his family, friends and all of Canada for supporting him. I think Ross is a great guy but he should really buy himself a gas mask if he's going to be around second hand smoke. Come to think of it, all of us should!

Feb. 14 - Happy Valentine's Day from Nagano. It wasn't so happy for Elvis Stojko who really wanted to win the gold medal for skating but won a silver instead. Elvis was badly injured. He told no one. He kept it all to himself and never complained once. I give Elvis a gold medal for courage! Way to go Elvis!

Update: Ok, so what if Olympic cross country competitor Philip Bitok of Kenya finished last in the 10 km race? Norwegian superstar cross country skiier Bjorn Daehlie who won the gold medal in that race waited at the finish line in the rain and snow to congratuate and hug Bitok. Beardie hugs to Bjorn! Now that's what the Olympics are all about.

Feb. 15 - Cool Runnings for the Canadian 2 man Bobsled team which finished tied with Italy for the gold today in Nagano. Imagine that, both teams with exactly the same times! Do the Math. Medal count is 9 and growing. "Peace be the Journey!"

This reporting business can't be all work and no play, so I think I'll give Daisy a call. Better yet, I'll email Daisy. You can too. She lives in Ichikawa, in Chiba Prefecture in Japan. Take a look at her homepage and a map that shows how far she is from Nagano. Do I have time to visit Daisy? You bet.

Feb. 16 - Congratulations to Team Canada for shining performances against all opposition. They are perfect and headed for the medal round. Bring on the Russians, bring on the Czechs, bring on the world!

Way to go ice dancers Shae-Lynne Borne and Victor Kratz. You did very well and I loved your Riverdance number!

Feb. 17 - All Hail Harada!! Yes, Japanese ski jumping sensation Harada soared through the wind high above the hills of Nagano to land a perfectly spectacular jump. Harada helped the Japanese team capture the gold medal in the team event.

"I did it. I did it," Harada said later as tears rolled down his cheeks. "All four of us worked together and got the gold. We helped each other. Everyone was the best." (cnnsi quote)

Feb. 18 - Congratulations to all the athletes who participated in the Games. Most of them are staying in the Olympic Village. There are a lot of people from many different countries walking aroung the streets of Nagano, buying souvenirs.

Feb. 19 - Tara Lipinski wins ladies' figure skating today. What a sensational performance. Way to go Tara! Daisy's been practising for the Beardie Olympics. She also won a gold medal!

Annie Perreault of Canada claimed gold in the women's 500-meter short track Olympic speed skating event Thursday after her teammate, world record holder Isabelle Charest, was disqualified because she caused a crash.

Feb. 20 - Skipping the games today. Visiting with Daisy. Disappointed to hear that Team Canada lost to the Czech Republic. Wayne Gretzky was heartbroken as we all were. Good try guys!

Feb. 21 - Canadians capture team relay gold in speed skating. In that great race, the 5,000-metre relay, Marc Gagnon whose hopes were dashed earlier in the 500 m short track when he fell - with Derrick Campbell of Cambridge, Ont., Eric Bedard of St-Thecle, Que., and Francois Drolet of Quebec City - won his first Olympic gold medal.

Feb. 22 - Czechs win Gold Medal in Hockey. "Dominator shouts out Russians! Congrats to the Czech team, having least number of NHL players out of the Dream 6, on their victory. What a gutsy performance.

The games ended with fantastic, traditional and colourful closing ceremonies. Most memorable were the Drums of Nagano. Thank you to our fine hosts, the Japanese people. Domo arigato, Nagano! I'm going to relax for a day or two and then head back to Canada.

Olympic (and Winter) Stories
from the Internet
Winter Sports I love!

I just learned how to go tobogganing down really big hills. I got a new toboggan for Christmas that looks like a snowmobile. My mom and dad took me tobogganing with my little brother for the first time. Daddy sent me down a long, long hill all by myself. My mommy was afraid to watch. I had so much fun. I like tobogganing because you get to go really fast!

I learned how to steer, but my brother doesn't know how yet. He snuffed out and went face first into the snow. He got up and tried it again. He is not afraid of anything! My mommy still can't watch. We wish we could take Bailey, but she would chase the toboggans all over the place! The best part of tobogganing is coming home and having hot chocolate! I can't wait to go tobogganing again!

Daisy's Olympic Story

This is Daisy in Japan. This is my Olympic story. I hope you'll like it.

My mom is from Nagano, where the 1998 Winter Olympics are being held. I'm going to write about my mom's grandma. Her name is Shizue Okamoto. She lives in Yamanouchi Town where many of the downhill ski races are going on. She is 81 years old. She is tiny but very healthy. She's teaching her friends a Japanese traditional craft using colorful threads. It is called Temari, meaning a hand ball. They make beautiful balls with threads of many colors. They tie threads to small cores and make them into round balls.

I attached a couple of pictures (see below) of Temari so you could see what they were. She and her students have made over 800 Temaris. They hope to hand one ball to each athlete of Olympics and Paralympics. They made those balls hoping that the memories of Nagano last in the athletes' hearts for a long time. My mom and I thought it was a swell idea, and we are very proud of her.
