Jessica sent Flat Stanley to her Aunt in Woodstock, New Brunswick.
Dear Mrs. Naar and Students,
First of all let me introduce myself. I am Jessica's Aunt Wendy and I live in Woodstock, New Brunswick. I was delighted to have Stanley visit me here. We had lots of fun together.
Since Jessica mailed him to me here in Woodstock we decided that we should see what is so interesting in the local area. Woodstock is in Carleton County and was made into a town in 1856. That makes it the oldest town in all of New Brunswick. Woodstock is right beside the Saint John river and has another river that goes through it. That river has a very long and funny name. It is called the Meduxnekeag river. It took a long time for Stanley to be able to say that name.
After we finished discovering what Woodstock was like we took a drive to some of the other communities. There are lots of very big business here in Carleton County. Have you ever heard of McCain Foods? Well, Stanley and I went to the small village of Florenceville and got to see the building where McCain Foods makes all kinds of great things to eat. They make pies, pizza pockets, juice and french fries- yummy!
From there we went to Centreville and saw the building where they actually make fire trucks. Stanley was very excited when he was alowed to sit on one of the trucks.
On our way back to Wodstock, we stopped at the town of Hartland. It's not a very big town but it has the longest covered bridge in the whole world. It is made ouit of wood and there isn't much light when you drive through it. Not only is it very long but it is very old too. It was opened in July of 1901 so that makes it almost 97 years old! Another interesting fact we learned about Hartland is that three of New Brunswick's premiers were actually born there.
On the weekend Stanley and I went on a longer trip. We went to Fredericton, which is an hour away from Woodstock. Fredericton is the capital city of New Brunswick and just like Woodstock it sits on the Saint John river too. The University of New Brunswick is right in the centre of Fredericton and it's one of the oldest colleges in North America. Stanley thinks he might want to go to that university when he grows up.
On our way to Fredericton we passed a tiny village called Meductic. There aren't very many houses in the village but there is one very large factory there called Sabian Cymbals. Cymbals are that part of a drum set that looks like a shiny hat. They make thousands of them every year and sell them all over the world.
Then we passed a town called Nackawic. There is a huge pulp and paper mill there. We saw lots of transport trucks with big logs on their trailers going into the mill. The logs will be made into paper products.
Stanley and I went shopping for a few things so he could show you where he was. We got a sticker with a picture of purple violets on it because that is the flower of New Brunswick. We also got a post card showing part of downtown Woodstock. The river you see in this picture is the Meduxnekeag river. The other post card shows you the longest covered bridge that is in Hartland. I also thought you would like to have a flag of New Brunswick to hang in the classroom and Stanley thought that was a great idea too.
Stanley and I had great fun together. I really enjoyed having him visit me. Please say hello to Jessica for me and thank her for sending Stanley on such a long trip.
Yours Truly,
Aunt Wendy.
