INTERNET PROJECT: Teacher Notes for…
Buddy's Bearded Collie Literacy Notebook
Featuring Bentley and Blueberry
(Based on the Grade 2 Expectations of the Ontario Curriculum)
One or two weeks before (depending on school location):
- Buddy sends out package containing:
- Buddy-plush (return)
- "Bentley and Blueberry" soft cover book and cassette tape (keep)
- Photos of Buddy (keep)
- Parent pages (keep)
- Activity and Contract pages (keep)
- Buddy's Literacy Notebook (return)
- Classroom teacher sets up display or bulletin board in anticipation of Buddy's arrival.
- The class visits Buddy's website @ http://www.skylinc.net/~scarfone/buddy.htm. The teacher explains about Buddy and his website, bearded collies, and then tells the class that they will be doing a special Internet project.
- The package arrives and the classroom teacher inventories the materials and sends confirmation email to Buddy (scarfone@skylinc.net). The teacher may prefer to open this package with the children.
- Classroom teacher previews the story and activities posted on the website. The teacher modifies the package to suit the needs of the children.
Week One:
- Buddy's package arrives
and the classroom teacher shares this with the children. Teacher may wish to consider celebrating this by baking or buying cookies (Buddy's favourite treats are cookies).
- Make a school wide announcement. Welcome Buddy. Highlight this project in school newsletter or on the school website. Share the experience with other teaching staff.
- Inquiry Lesson: The class uses this to prepare for the Bentley and Blueberry story. The lesson plan may be found on the website.
- "Bentley and Blueberry" by Randy Houk: The classroom teacher follows the lesson plan outline on the website. This includes motivational aspects, storytelling and follow-up comprehension questions.
- Beardie Masks:
The instructions and the mask template are included in the package.
- Buddy goes home
: The Buddy plush and book should be sent home with each child in the class. Teachers ought to decide the instances where the cassette tape might be beneficial to parent and child. Encourage shared reading. Note the sample letters to parents. Send "The Benefactory's" Parent Pages home as well. Ensure that the students take care of Buddy because he has many more trips to complete in order to fulfill his literacy mission.
Week Two:
- Reading Contract: The students can re-read "Bentley and Blueberry" as necessary and complete the contract pages which focus on comprehension and creative writing:
- Reading Contract: Evaluation
- A Day in the Life of Bentley or Blueberry
- A Story Web
- A Friendly Letter
The teacher conferences and evaluates student work. The students evaluate themselves as well.
- The students complete extra activities as required. These activities are enclosed in the package. These include:
- Picture of Buddy
- My Book Report
- Telling About Books
Week Three
- The students visit Buddy's Guestbook on his website and leave a message for him. Buddy will reply to each student via the Guestbook "reply function".
- Students will individually write journal entries i.e. hardcopies in Buddy's Literacy Notebook.
- The teacher begins to create a website to display project data (stories, pictures, graphs, etc.).
Week Four
- Online chat with author Randy Houk and Buddy. This will be arranged through Mr. Scarfone at a mutually convenient time. Students and teacher are encouraged to prepare questions ahead of time.
- Teacher and students devise their own special activity. The class is free to discuss, choose and complete and activity of their choice. It may be the whole class, group or individual. Be as creative as you wish. Use some aspect of information technology, though. Send the details and results to scarfone@skylinc.net . Buddy will highlight it on the website.
Week Five
- Summary thoughts of the project. Reflections on the project as a whole. Write an email to Buddy or send it as an HTML page.
- The Teacher evaluation is completed. This form is highlighted on the website but will be completed privately by the teacher and sent via email to Mr. Scarfone and Buddy
Week Six
- Complete any unfinished activities, evaluations, etc.
- Buddy and the Literacy Notebook are returned via regular post so that the next project may begin. Keep all other materials.
- Celebrate your successful completion of the project and let Buddy know all the details.
Thank you for participating in the project. Why not complete one of your own?
